True design is not about endlessly adding more. It is about stripping away everything unnecessary until only the essence remains. That belief became the foundation of what COFFEEPHARM and QC LAB wanted to create. Not just another eye-catching piece of merchandise, but an object capable of capturing the identity, precision, and mindset of researchers and quality control professionals. The evolution of the Micropipette Pen began exactly there.

We revisited the original design from the ground up. Simply shrinking the silhouette of a micropipette into pen form was never enough. It needed to carry the tension and structural beauty of real laboratory instruments, along with the subtle familiarity that only researchers would immediately recognize. What followed was an extensive redesign process aimed at transforming a novelty stationery item into a symbolic object worthy of a professional workspace.

The first evolution focused on proportion.

Earlier versions emphasized the iconic features of a micropipette too aggressively. The oversized push button and finger rest created a visually heavy upper structure, making the product feel more like a character-themed accessory than a refined writing instrument. We started by removing that visual weight.

In the final version, the overall silhouette became significantly slimmer and more balanced, closely reflecting the sharp proportions of an actual micropipette. Particular attention was given to the tapered transition from body to tip, extending the conical flow to create a smoother and more sophisticated visual line. This was not simply an aesthetic adjustment. It was designed to recreate the familiar tactile and visual experience researchers encounter every day while handling precision instruments.

The second evolution was about removing decoration and emphasizing mechanism.

Previous iterations relied heavily on exaggerated dials and mechanical details intended to communicate complexity. Instead, they distracted from the purity of the form. But the direction we pursued was not decorative excess. It was minimal precision.

Unnecessary details were eliminated with intention. In their place, the boundaries between components were refined, while the transitions and tolerances between parts were expressed more clearly to create the impression of engineered precision. Even the subtle slots beneath the blue top button were redesigned to function not as decorative accents, but as visual cues hinting at the sophistication of laboratory equipment. The more we removed, the clearer the design became.

The third evolution challenged the conventions of ordinary pens.

Most writing instruments are designed around portability and universality. The Micropipette Pen deliberately rejected that philosophy from the beginning. Some may question the larger finger-rest structure compared to a conventional pen clip. But this product was never intended to disappear into a pocket. It was designed to stand proudly within a researcher’s environment.

In the final design, the finger rest evolved beyond a clip into a structural element engineered to connect seamlessly with a dedicated stand. Rather than rolling horizontally across a desk, the pen was designed to occupy vertical space like an organized laboratory workstation. This creates an entirely different user experience — one that visually reinforces the identity of researchers and quality control professionals.

Ultimately, the purpose of this redesign process was simple.

It was never about creating something that merely looked attractive. It was about pursuing a clear answer to why this object needed to exist in this exact form. COFFEEPHARM and QC LAB wanted every detail to reflect the discipline of quality control, the atmosphere of laboratory work, and the pride carried by professionals in the field.

The sharp lines cutting through an overwhelming white surface, the restrained use of blue accent points, and the carefully reduced structural balance now define the final design language. What emerged is no longer just a piece of merchandise, but a physical representation of the direction and identity the brand seeks to pursue.

In the end, obsession with essentials always reveals itself through refinement.

The Micropipette Pen became the smallest object capable of proving that idea.
